What are you looking for?

A scripture passage I read last Friday, John 1:35-39, keeps coming to mind, drawing me to the question Jesus asks. Here’s the situation: a couple of followers of John the Baptist leave John to follow Jesus when Jesus passes by and John declares Jesus is the Lamb of God. Jesus turns to look at them and asks, “What are you looking for?”

What are you looking for?

This question feels important to me this Lenten season. I invite you to join me in holding that question up to the light over the next days. If you’re making space for God during Lent, asking God to show you your heart, this question is a good place to start.

What are you looking for?

For many of us the past months have shaken our lives to the point that we’re a little more raw, a little more tender - and maybe a little more open to discovering the answer to the question Jesus asked.

What are you looking for?

My prayer is that you’ll peel away the upper layers of desire to identify the deepest longings of your heart. Take the time. Don’t assume the first thing that comes to mind is the complete answer. Make space to sit with the question.

I’m exploring the scripture passage as a contemplative prayer here.

If you’d like to prayerfully explore the question with another person, listening for God’s voice, I’d be honored to join you. That’s what spiritual direction is about: listening together. Just let me know.
